Superman | Review
With the downfall of the current MCU, many of us remember the first Superman (before Zack Snyder ruined him) and the fun that could be brought back to the character with one of Marvel’s better directors. Based solely on his take on the Guardians of the Galaxy, and considering he has gone on record saying Superman was his favorite comic book character. We were all excited to see his take on the world’s first superhero.
Clark Kent/Superman
By far the most famous superhero in the world, Clark Kent is a mild-mannered and often overlooked as too weak to be a threat, while Superman is confident, powerful, and everything to everyone.
Lois Lane
The long-time love interest of Superman is often at the center of the chaos with her investigative work and inability to take no for an answer.
Lex Luther
Jimmy Olson
Ultraman
Krypto
Mr. Terrific
Guy Gardener
Hawkgirl
Pros:
- It’s nice to see a more comic-accurate Jimmy Olsen.
Cons:
- Superman’s birth parents (despite nearly 100 years of lore) are now, in Gunn’s version, have sent him to Earth to kill anyone who opposes him, marry multiple wives, replace the population with Kryptonians with said wives, and conquer the whole world to establish a new Krypton.
- Clark Kent’s parents are bumbling fools. They are written like they are from the 1930s, do not understand not only cellphones but the spectrum of human emotions.
- There is no distinction between Clark Kent and Superman.
- Superman is weak and doesn’t command the respect he does in the comics.
- Superman’s suit looks cheap, the “S” on his cape looks like an iron on, collar is an odd and the suit just looks like a knock off padded suit.
- Hawkgirl for some reason screams when she flies throughout the air.
- The plot is relatively boring and all over the place.
Finale Verdict: Though there is fun to be had in the film, you will have to turn your brain off, as there is not much going on. It’s cheesy and breaks the Superman lore in the worst way. Wait until it’s on HBO Max and watch it for free.
