New World Money

A few years ago Americanflat founder, Giorgio Piccoli, moved to New York City to work for JPMorgan. After getting ridiculed by gallery owners for asking about pieces under $5,000, Piccoli realized that he wanted to create a brand that was not for the art investor, but for the art lover. The Americanflat mission is simple: they strive to produce museum-quality, exclusively curated wall art from impressive, hand-selected artists that is both accessible and affordable.

Artist Mike Perry Launches Wondering Around Wandering

Artist and graphic designer Mike Perry presents Wondering Around Wandering (WAW), a three-month exhibition, open community event space, and working studio in Brooklyn’s emerging Crown Heights neighborhood. From September 15 through November 25, 2012, Perry and friends will take over a 7,000 square-foot warehouse space at 983 Dean Street, with funds raised on the online crowd-funding platform Kickstarter — 766 backers contributed more than $30,000. There they will host a series of free educational workshops and idea-igniting opportunities for people of all ages to tap into their own creative potential, discover or become a mentor, or just have a mind-expandingly good time. Additional support from longtime creative partner Urban Outfitters will help to keep the space open and free to the community.

Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat “Olympic Rings” at Gagosian Gallery

Coinciding with the start of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, the city’s Gagosian Gallery is now home to Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat‘s collaborative 1985 Olympic Rings painting. Inspired by the 1984 Summer Olympic Games held in Los Angeles, the piece is part of a group of collaborative artworks produced by the two between 1983 and 1985 and pairs Warhol’s abstract and stylized take on the Olympic five-rings symbol with a tribute to famous African-American athletes from Olympics past – done by Basquiat in his signature graffiti-informed style. Measuring 81 1/8″ x 183 1/2″, Olympic Rings will remain on display through August 11, 2012.

Reverse of Volume by Yasuaki Onishi

Reverse of Volume is Yasuaki Onishi‘s latest installation features a remarkable mountainous form made of the simplest materials. White plastic sheeting and hot black glue were the two things that went into creating this piece that offers a floating aesthetic. In a process the Japanese artist calls “casting the invisible,” plastic sheeting is draped over stacked cardboard boxes and glued into place. These supporting boxes are removed once the hot glue has dried, leaving a void under the sheets to create an illusion of suspension. The piece is currently being showcased at the Rice Gallery in Houston, Texas until June 24.
